How I got started with Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu

How did I get started in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu? Right before the lockdowns started, I discovered personalities like Jocko Willink and David Goggins. They helped re-shape my thinking and mindset to keep pushing and helped me develop a type of discipline I never knew I had.

I was waking up at 4:30 am on a daily basis and working out and getting my day planned out. I had started to implement multi-day fasts to lean out and be in better shape. When the lockdowns came, the discipline and drive that I had recently acquired helped me to be consistent and not end gain weight or eat poorly.

Listening to Jocko’s podcasts and interviews, I would consistently hear him talking about jiu-jitsu but I honestly had no idea what it was. I heard it mentioned when watching UFC and a guy at my previous job mentioned he does it off and on when we somehow stumbled onto the topic of Joe Rogan

My wife’s cousin came down here from college (to South Florida) to escape the lockdowns in New York. She was also listening to some of Jocko’s podcasts and we read his book (Way of the Warrior Kid). She wanted to try a BJJ class. As soon as Florida was allowed to re-open, we looked for a BJJ school that was open.

I took her to Gracie Barra Coral Springs (IG: @gbcoralsp). As I went in to help her get situated, the professor asked to try the class as well. I was hesitant but not too hesitant because I gave a quick yes on the second push. This was June 2nd, 2020.

The rest, as they say, is history… More to come soon!
